Born
in Michigan, raised in Los Angeles, Block began painting when
she moved to New York at seventeen. She began her art studies
at Vassar College before going abroad in her junior year to
study more intensely at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Sorbonne
in Paris. She was immediately attracted to the styles of Clemente,
Picasso, Schiele, and Van Gogh.
After
graduating from Vassar, she returned to Los Angeles to pursue
a career in acting and music, and she continued to paint.
She began a prolific series of paintings characterized by
bold colors and somber moods. There are overtones in her
canvases which depict the struggle of the individual trying
to find faith in the contemporary society; her work is also
imbued with her own passion and sensitivity. She does mostly
studies of the human figure and portraits, painting in watercolor,
gouache, and acrylic.
Block
has had two showings of her work in Los Angeles this year.
She had a solo exhibit in February at a private home in
Santa Monica. Following that, she was involved in a group
show at the Orbetello Gallery in Los Angeles in March. Her
work resides in many private collections. Some of her work
